Keep Your A/C Drains Open This Summer: Using Drain Punch & P-Free

Ah, summer. Long days, shorter nights, and the temperature rises and rises. As the outdoor heat gets turned on by the change of the seasons we all find ourselves having to lean harder on the AC to keep things cool. In fact, in the modern day and age, most of us are so used to having whole-house AC, we just accept it as a normal fact of our lives.

That normalcy means it can be easy to forget that the cool we all love comes from a complex HVAC system. It’s also easy to forget that your HVAC system can use a little care from time to time to keep things running smoothly. Like your car before heading out on a road trip, your cooling system can really benefit from a good once-over before the summer heat hits.

The Condensate Line Clog You Don’t Want to Come Home To

I remember the day well. It was a summer day in Tidewater Virginia, and I had been working hard all day. The job I had at the time involved working outdoors… and it was hot and humid. I think the heat index was invented just so folks in places with high heat and humidity can quantify just how miserable they are in the summer… anyway, by the time I got home, I was ready to get cooled off.

The house wasn’t as cool as I was expecting when I walked in, but I didn’t notice too much. Warm is cooler than hot, after all. As evening wore on, though, the temperature inside rose. A quick check of the thermostat showed it was far warmer than I wanted it to be, and it didn’t seem like the AC was doing anything. I called a service company, and they said they wouldn’t be able to get to me until the next evening.

It was a miserable wait… a hot sleepless night, another hot day at work, but finally the tech arrived. He got down to business and soon discovered that the culprit was a clogged condensate drain line. I learned a lot about condensate lines that day.

Now, I like learning, but the conditions could have been far more comfortable. In any event, from the tech I learned that this sort of problem is not uncommon. As the system works to cool your home, it pulls moisture from the air. That moisture condenses and is then supposed to drain away through a small pipe that carries it out of your house. Over time, though, algae, mold, and gunk can start to build up inside the line… much like various gunk builds up in the drain on a sink. When the line finally clogs and backs up, your AC system will shut down.

This is Where Drain Punch Comes In

The tech did a lot of work to clear that clog, and since then I have learned about something that would have made his job easier. In fact, If I had known about it before then, I could have potentially kept the whole mess from happening altogether. As it turns out, Drain Punch isn’t just for your sinks and tubs.

Drain Punch is actually also a game-changer for HVAC maintenance. That condensate line, draining condensate away from your HVAC, is in essence a drain like any other. Using Drain Punch in the condensate line will clear out any organic buildup fast, just like it does with the bathroom sink. This keeps the pathway clear so the condensate can freely flow right on down the line.

Using Drain Punch on the condensate line as part of your regular summer prep can help you keep your system running like it should. This means you can avoid having a day like the one I described above, and can instead increase your chances of keeping cool and comfortable all summer long.

P-Free can help, too

While Drain Punch handles the pipes, P-Free shines when it comes to cleaning copper coils in HVAC equipment. Dirty coils mean reduced efficiency and higher energy bills, which nobody wants. So, If your system uses copper coils, pick up some P-Free.

A word to the wise… Drain Punch is a non-acid cleaner, and as such is a powerful chemical called a base. P-Free is an acidic formula. Chemically speaking, these two are polar opposites and will react powerfully if they come into contact with each other – like that baking soda and vinegar volcano you built in grade school, only way more powerful.

For your safety, don’t allow the P-Free and Drain Punch to mix. Follow all the safety precautions on the labels carefully. Safety first, friends!

One-Two Punch for a Cooler Summer
