Service Call in a Bottle: How Wiener’s Plumbing Uses Drain Punch and P-Free

In the service plumbing business, time is money, and you want to be as efficient as possible while still getting the job done right. Anytime you find a product that helps you get better results is a major win. If it is simple and easy to use, that is even better.

When Dan Benoit, owner of Wiener’s Plumbing in Kelowna, British Columbia, became aware of Drain Punch and P-Free, it was a game-changer. Both products have become important tools in his company’s toolbox. Let’s take a look at how Dan found out about Drain Punch and P-Free, how they are used in the business, and how Wiener’s Plumbing became the first international distributor for these products.

Instagram leads to Innovation

Dan’s Drain Punch Story began in the Spring of 2022. Matt, who is Dan’s service manager, was scrolling Instagram looking for content related to the plumbing trade and ran across videos of Drain Punch in action on the @drainpunchcarl channel. He was immediately impressed by what he saw, so Matt showed the videos to Dan.

“I don’t know how he stumbled upon it, but Matt told me, ‘Dan, you’ve got to check this stuff out,’” Dan recalls. That discovery began a transformation in the way Wiener’s Plumbing approached many of their service calls, especially the ones involving drain cleaning.

Difference-Making Drain Cleaning

Wiener’s Plumbing handles commercial, institutional, and residential work. As you might expect, they have to deal with a smorgasbord of slow-draining pipes, clogged sinks, and other issues related to drains.  Dan and his team have made Drain Punch into an important follow up to the use of mechanical augers (snakes).

“Kitchen sinks are the worst,” Dan explains. “After we auger to clear a blockage, if they have to auger it to clear it, we always dump a bottle of this stuff [Drain Punch] down afterwards, just to clean out the rest of the stuff that you can’t get with the machines”.

Dan’s team also recommends that their customers use Drain Punch as a preventative measure. By using Drain Punch to help maintain their drains and keep them clear, the customers can potentially avoid making expensive emergency service calls. Dan’s team like to refer to Drain Punch as a  “service call in a bottle”, a tribute to its value in saving customers time and money.

Dan is also a proponent of P-Free. He thinks it has great value in commercial locations like arenas, hotels, and restaurants, where they frequently have to deal with slow running urinals. In those cases, Dan says “if it’s still draining, but it’s slow,at least you can pour this stuff [P-Free] down, and it just dissolves everything away, and then we basically walk away. And we’re good to go.”

Even in situations where time constraints mean a urinal needs to be pulled off the wall and cleared quickly, P-Free can help. Dan’s team likes to pour some in once they’ve re-mounted the urinal to clear out the rest of the buildup and keep it running smoothly, just like pouring Drain Punch into a drain after snaking it.

Crossing the Border

Getting Drain Punch and P-Free into Canada took some doing. As you might expect, importing chemicals across an international border meant that a customs account needed to be set up, along with a few other bureaucratic hurdles. Once these logistical challenges were worked out, Drain Punch and P-Free were able to flow across the border. This allowed Wiener’s Plumbing to become the exclusive supplier of these products in British Columbia.

“If anybody in British Columbia needs it, they can get it through us,” Dan says. They have a website set up for folks to order through. (https://drainpunchcanada.com/)

The Story Behind Wiener’s Plumbing

A fixture of the Kelowna, British Columbia community since 1984, Wiener’s Plumbing is named after its original owner, Wayne, whose nickname was “Wiener.” Dan came on with the company in the late 2010s, and after working for Wayne for three years he wound up buying the business in February 2021.

“When I knew Wayne was thinking about retiring, I told him, ‘If you ever want to sell, let me know.’ Nine months later, we struck a deal, and my wife and I took over the company,” Dan recalls.

It has proven to be a good business move for Dan. Since he bought the company, he has been able to grow it from a four-person team to a total of twelve employees. This tripling in size has expanded their positive impact in the community.

Looking Ahead

Dan has a clear vision for the future. He wants to spread the word about Drain Punch and P-Free and see more of his customers, both existing and yet to come, to use these products as a part of how they do routine maintenance. Dan believes that he is gaining momentum, and as word spreads, he believes that he and Drain Punch Carl can make that vision into a reality.

Drain Punch and P-Free aren’t just products to Dan. They are clear solutions that demonstrate Wiener’s Plumbing’s commitment to innovation and quality. Dan is confident that, as more customers discover the benefits of these products, Drain Punch and P-Free will keep on making waves in the plumbing industry, one “service call in a bottle” at a time.
