Interstate 95 is one of the busiest highways in the United States. Running from Miami, Florida right on up to the border with Canada in Maine, this 1,924-mile highway passes through 15 states and links the major cities of the East Coast.
179 miles of this road lie within the Commonwealth of Virginia, traversing from the Washington DC area, through the state capital of Richmond, then Petersburg, and on down to North Carolina and points south. Strung along this Virginian section of the highway are a series of nine different rest areas.
The Challenge
As you might expect, the rest areas along I-95 are busy places that see a lot of very heavy traffic. Thousands of people use the restroom facilities each day, including the urinals. All the use can lead to frequent clogs, which can create challenges.
